Its been 7 years since the first Uprooted Sunshine event at C’s bar in 2005. We’ve toured China, brought guests from all around the world, performed at festivals and events all over Asia, released music on labels in Europe and America…its been a long ride.

Over the last year or so we have been fairly quiet. A few switch ups in the line up, a few members moving around the globe, a lot of the crew working on their various solo and collaboration projects. It’s been a busy few years for us all, but we’re still here and we’re still going strong!

To celebrate 7 years of Uprooted, we are very excited to be bringing back long time Uprooted MCs Esia and Arminda!! Now residing and repping Uprooted in Korea, Esia and Arminda are absolute fire on the mic and we cant wait to get the whole crew back together for this special event. The full Uprooted crew en-force plus a host of special guest appearances!!

This Friday the ever-evolving Uprooted Sunshine celebrate 6 years of pushing reggae music and its many forms in Shanghai and around the middle kingdom! To celebrate, we are excited to welcome back UK Dub Heavyweight – Vibronics, along side the great voice of Echo Ranks!!

Vibronics, the future sound of dub, have been vibrating the world with bass since 1995. With over 40 releases on their own legendary SCOOPS label and a host of albums, singles and remixes for a myriad of others, their music is at the forefront of the UK Dub scene. In the studio they have worked with Zion Train, Iration Steppas, Macka B, Ranking Joe, High Tone, Big Youth and an almost endless list of dub & reggae luminaries. Steve Barker’s final set in Shanghai – Tonight!!

Published June 17, 2011 by subcultureshanghai

Steve Barker @ The BBC – 1970’s

Over the years, SubCulture are asked many times how we managed to arrange all the artists we have brought over to Shanghai. How did you manage to get Mark Ernestus and Tikiman over to China? How did you convince Adrian Sherwood to do a live set in Shelter? How did you get to know Kode9 and get ChaCha to record 5 tracks with him? How did you get in touch with RSD? Where did you meet Disrupt and Soom T? The answer to all these questions is the same. ‘He/She is a friend of a friend’. We are now going to give away one our best kept secrets. This friend, and a person who has made a huge impact on the music scene in Shanghai and China as a whole, is one of our favourite semi-regular guests at The Shelter – Mr Steve Barker!

Steve Barker DJing @ The Uprooted Sunshine 5th Anniversary – Beijing 2010

After a promising start in journalism, interviewing Jimi Hendrix and Yoko Ono in the same week, Steve Barker’s ambitions receded only to be recruited to Radio Blackburn in 1978 to work on the music review show RPM. In 1980 RPM became Spinoff, then in 1984 mutated into On the Wire, now the longest running continuous alternative music show on UK radio. Although a lot of the music is concentrated around reggae, dub and other Jamaican music styles, On the Wire was one of the first shows in the UK to play hip hop, house and techno music. It gave the first radio plays in the UK for Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson and the radio premier of 808 State’s “Pacific State” and A Guy Called Gerald’s “Voodoo Ray”.

At the beginning of the 1990s On the Wire was under threat from the BBC, but at the last minute the show was saved by the BBC board, with the show being described as a ‘unique BBC product’. Brian “Planet” Jackson and John Peel were key figures in saving the programme. When the programme was saved it moved to a new slot on Thursday evenings, and then to its current slot on Saturday evenings.

Steve Barker @ The Shelter, Shanghai 2009

Steve has been living in Beijing, China since June 2002 and still records his ‘On The Wire’ show weekly, as well as being dub columnist for the highly regarded WIRE magazine. From next month Steve is retiring and moving back to the UK. Steve has made a huge impact on the music scene here in China, and without him we couldn’t have booked so many wonderful acts at The Shelter. His music selection is always second to none, and his DJ sets have been some of our all time favourite sets. To give Steve the send off he deserves, Uprooted Sunshine will also be joined by Fred-I, who will also be playing his final set before leaving China, and HangZhou’s finest – DJ Maze. Don’t miss out on, what may be, the last time Steve Barker will grace the DJ booth at Shelter!

Win 1 of 3 sets of the PAUSE:MUSIC mixtape series!

Published March 28, 2011 by subcultureshanghai

This week see’s the first of two special release on PAUSE:MUSIC released in April, AM444’s debut release ‘Eye Wonder‘ and SIG’s debut album ‘Sad Mirror‘. These are the first proper releases on PAUSE:MUSIC, but as some of you may remember they put out a series of mixtapes in 2009 highlighting some of their favourite Shanghai based DJ’s. There were 6 cds in all, mixes by Ben Huang, Uprooted Sunshine, Alan Shanyinde with Dane and Xiao Feng, Yen, DJ Fortune and B6. With support from Shanghai Tattoo, City Weekend, Captains Bar and The Shelter, these releases were given away free at parties, as well as distributed round Shanghai’s coffee shops, bars, clothing stores and various other places, and they quickly disappeared!

We’ve managed to unearth 3 sets of all 6 cds which we are going to give away for free! All you need to do is shoot us an email to subcultureshanghai@gmail.com with ‘PAUSE Mixtapes’ in the title, and on thursday we will pick 3 names at random. The mixtapes will be available to pick up at the AM444 release party this Friday or alternatively we will cover the costs send it to any winner in China, but if you are outside of China will would ask you to pay the posatge. Good luck!
