Beijing Support: Yauman, Sickstar, Drunk Monk

Shanghai Support: Acid Pony Club (live), Drunk Monk, Steven Lorenz, ChaCha, Didje, Ubec

Sub-Culture is very excited to present 2562 aka A Made Up Sound!

Over the course of three landmark albums on Pinch’s mighty Tectonic label and his own When In Doubt imprint, Dave Huismans has laid out a singular and highly influential vision of broken rhythms, off time percussion, crazed sampling and field recording, re-inventing techno, disco and bass music at each and every turn.

Having released on Tectonic, Martyn’s 3024 and the legendary Clone Bassment Series, and with support across the board from the likes of Kode9 and Benji B to house/techno veterans Anthony Shake Shakir and Francois K, he is currently operating on his own label and continuing to stun audiences with his unique and destructive dj sets and fluid live shows. 2562 sounds like very little else out there…

S L V Debut Release Out Now!!

S L V EP – artwork by Kim Laughton

One of the most exciting releases to come out of Shanghai for some time, S L V’s debut EP has just been released on Urban Waves Records. S L V comprises of two of Shanghai’s best producers, Downstate and Hamacide, and the combination of the 2 is devastating! I (Drunk Monk) have been dropping ‘Killers’ and ‘Clip Arp’ in my sets recently and each time I have had people ask me what tunes were (including Kode9!). SVBKVLT will be releasing a limited S L V 7″ early next year, but until then head over the Urban Wave’s Bandcamp and get downloading this (and dont be cheap, support and pay!)

Also, this Friday see the return of Hollow Point to The Shelter. Myself, Downstate and Hamacide are on the controls and are on straight up shoot-to-kill orders. Expect to hear the S L V EP get a proper first outing, as well as a whole bunch of new material and upfront killers. Kevlar recommended….

Sub-Cinema Halloween Special

Published October 24, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

Wednesday 31st October – Sub-Cinema Halloween Special

@ The Shelter – 5 YongFu Lu

Entrance: 50rmb – includes hand screen-printed movie poster designed by Gregor Koerting

This year we are taking Halloween a little more seriously with a special screening of 2 incredible pieces of film, one from 1920’s Sweden and the other from 70’s Britain.

Doors will open at 8pm, with the first screening at 9.15pm. There will be limited tickets/seats available as we want everyone to be comfortable and have a good view of the screen. Once all the tickets have been sold, or 5 minutes before the first movie, the doors to Shelter will be closed, lights will be turned off and mobile phone coverage will be disabled.

Advance tickets will be available from Sub-Cinema every Tuesday night at Dada throughout October or you can email us at subcultureshanghai@gmail.com to reserve. Tickets are 50rmb, and include a special limited edition, silk screened art print designed by Idle Beats’ Gregor Koerting. These prints will only be available to ticket holders and will not be on sale/available anywhere else. Attendees will also have the first chance to purchase a second movie poster before it goes on general sale, and which will be unveiled by the artist on the night between the 2 movies.

The theme of the evening is ‘Witchcraft’, a belief that existed in some form (and in some places still does) in many cultures around the world. The first screening will be ‘Haxan’ from 1922, and this will be followed up by ‘The Blood On Satan’s Claw’ from 1971.

Haxan (1922)

Silent movie – Captions in Swedish with English Sub-Titles

Häxan (English title: The Witches or Witchcraft Through The Ages) is a 1922 Swedish/Danish silent horror film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. Based partly on Christensen’s study of the Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th-century German guide for inquisitors, Häxan is a study of how superstition and the misunderstanding of diseases and mental illness could lead to the hysteria of the witch-hunts. The film was made as a documentary but contains dramatized sequences that are comparable to horror films.
In the version we will show, Bristol’s Bronnt Industries Kapital recently rescored the film adding even more to the already creepy and atmospheric style.

The Blood On Satan’s Claw (1971)

English language with English Sub-Titles

After a plowboy accidentally unearths the skeletal remains of a demonic creature, a cult of teenage devil-worshippers emerges in a 17th-century Cornwall farming community, led by the gorgeous temptress Angel Blake. Together, the children begin performing blood sacrifices in order to bring the skeletal demon back to life, and the superstitious locals attempt to use inquisition-style practices to put a stop to Angel’s cult.

A highly regarded piece of British cinema, yet rarely seen, this lush, moody horror is superbly written and is still as shocking as it was back in 1971. The film was originally intended as a three-part series, but was eventually edited down to one feature. Blood On Satan’s Claw ranks alongside ‘The Wicker Man’ and ‘Witchfinder General’ as one of the best horror movies to come out of Britain in the 1970’s. We are very excited to be showing this movie in the darkness of The Shelter.

Oil Works in Shanghai

Published September 7, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

With so much going on these days in Shanghai its easy for, shall we say, the less hardened promoter to have their events lost in the hype of other events in the city and not get the recognition and coverage it deserves. Today and tonight see one of these events, the return of Fukouka’s Oil Works crew to Shanghai, celebrating their 10th anniversary.

Sub-Culture brought Oil Works over in June 2011 for the release of Hamacide’s ‘Might Little Machine’ remix album. This year the crew are celebrating 10 years in the game and so Toru from Boobies Tattoo Studio has brought them over for an exhibition at Kin starting this afternoon and a party at The Shelter this evening.

Yesterday we went over to Idle Beats new studio (which is great by the way) to check out the Popy Oil print they have produced for today’s exhibition. The print. entitled ‘Hello Yello’, comes in various colourways and styles, including hollographic paper and also some great versions on top of old Idle Beats test prints. There are some real beauties in their, all one offs, so id get down to Kin today as soon as possible if you want to grab the best versions. Here’s a few pics of how its looking.

Yesterday evening we also popped in to Kin to say hello to Popy and Zorzi from Oil Works crew and to have a quick preview of the exhibition. A lot of the pieces weren’t yet hung whilst we were there, but we did manage to see a few of the images and they are looking great. They have also brought a whole bunch of really nice Oil Works shirts, cds and vinyl, books and a weird mexican wrestling/gimp mask. Here’s a few pics of what we saw.

The Oil Works exhibition kicks off this afternoon at Kin (64 MaoMing/Yanan) and the big event is at The Shelter tonight (5 YongFu/FaHuaZhen) with Olive Oil (live), Zorzi, 44 (live) from Xiamen and Hamacide. Olive Oil’s live set was fantastic last time and we are very excited to see what he has in store for this 10 year anniversary bash, and we are also very interested in seeing, for the first time in Shangai, 44’s live performance. All of this will be joined by the great visual work of Popy Oil. SO, if you can pull yourself away from all the hype, come down to Shelter tonight and experience some serious quality live electronic music and visuals.
