Just a quick heads up on the next Sub-Culture event @ Shelter. Dope poster by Nini Sum!!
Jack Sparrow (or not)
In December, as part of the 3 year anniversary of Shelter, we booked one of our favourite artists of 2010 – Jack Sparrow. Unfortunately, due to some visa complication, Jack was unable to make the show, but luckily we still had a great turn out and, joined by Shanghai’s 1st lady of DnB Siesta, we mashed up the Shelter proper anyway. We are going to reschedule Jack Sparrow for some time early next year so keep an eye out. Check the poster, designed by Shanghai illustrator XiaoLongHua!
RSD aka Rob Smith (Smith and Mighty)
To round off the Uprooted 5 Year Anniversary, we put together a whole weekend of events at The Shelter, Shanghai. The Friday was headlined by Clive Chin and Twice, with SigBinHaus Soundsystem from Philippines in support, and the Saturday Sub-Culture brought over the one and only RSD aka Rob Smith from Smith and Mighty. Both events were dope, and RSD played an amazing set of heavy, reggae influenced Dubstep. Keep your eye out for a return visit from Rob in the coming months!
Also, check out the killer poster designed by long time Sub-Culture collaberator Chris Tomoya!

Sub-Culture present: An Introduction to Sonic Warfare by Steve Goodman AKA Kode 9
@ Dada, 115 Xing Fu Lu, near FaHuaZhen Lu
Free Entry, Doors @ 9pm, Starts @ 10pm
‘An Introduction To…’ is a new series of music and sound related lectures, discussions and workshops brought to you by Sub:Culture (Sub-Culture, Sub-Cinema, Sub-Culture Radio). Each event we will invite a guest speaker to lead a discussion, give a talk or conduct a workshop on their own specialist subjects/skills, from music production workshops and speeches on music history to photo exhibitions and hands-on music lessons (in both English and Chinese whenever possible) .
For our first event we are very excited to present a lecture by Steve Goodman AKA Kode 9, introducing the subjects and theories behind in his recently published book ‘Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect and the Ecology of Fear’.
Sound can be deployed to produce discomfort, express a threat, or create an ambiance of fear or dread—to produce a bad vibe. Sonic weapons of this sort include the “psychoacoustic correction” aimed at Panama strongman Manuel Noriega by the U.S. Army and at the Branch Davidians in Waco by the FBI, sonic booms (or “sound bombs”) over the Gaza Strip, and high-frequency rat repellents used against teenagers in malls. At the same time, artists and musicians generate intense frequencies in the search for new aesthetic experiences and new ways of mobilizing bodies in rhythm. In Sonic Warfare, Steve Goodman explores these uses of acoustic force and how they affect populations.
Steve Goodman is a Lecturer in Music Culture at the School of Sciences, Media, and Cultural Studies at the University of East London, a member of the CCRU (Cybernetic Culture Research Unit), and the founder of the record label Hyperdub. He produces bass-driven electronic music under the name Kode9 and is also a member of the sound art collective Audint.
This event will be presented in English only.

Sub-Culture are very excited to welcome back one of our favourite artists of the 21st century, the one and only KODE 9.
Although born in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, Kode9 is genetically a junglist. He started DJing in 1990 at the age of 16, playing a fusion of reggae, breaks, hip hop, jazz, funk and house. He was subsequently swept up by the emergence of the breakbeat hardcore, jungle and drum’n’bass scenes, and has been rinsin’ breaks, ragga chat and bubblin’ basslines ever since. DJing across the UK during the 90s, from Edinburgh, to Coventry, Kode9 migrated to London in 1997, suffering infection to darker strains of the emergent 2step garage scene, and after forming his label/collective Hyperdub in 2004, electronic music would never be the same again.
With a roster of people including Burial, Ikonika, The Bug, King Midas Sound, Darkstar, Zomby and many, many more, Hyperdub consistently puts out some of the most forward thinking and futuristic music out there. His recent mixtape release for DJ Kicks shows just how flexible and imaginative Kode 9’s tastes and skills are. A true pioneer and manipulator of soundwaves, once you’ve experienced one of Kode 9’s set, you will never be the same again.
Sub-Culture 倾力奉献: Kode 9 (Hyperdub)

音乐类型: Dubstep, Grime, Funky
