Sub-Culture presents: 2562 / A Made Up Sound

Thursday 4th April – Dada Beijing / Friday 5th April – The Shelter Shanghai

Beijing Support: Yauman, Sickstar, Drunk Monk

Shanghai Support: Acid Pony Club (live), Drunk Monk, Steven Lorenz, ChaCha, Didje, Ubec

Sub-Culture is very excited to present 2562 aka A Made Up Sound!

Over the course of three landmark albums on Pinch’s mighty Tectonic label and his own When In Doubt imprint, Dave Huismans has laid out a singular and highly influential vision of broken rhythms, off time percussion, crazed sampling and field recording, re-inventing techno, disco and bass music at each and every turn.

Having released on Tectonic, Martyn’s 3024 and the legendary Clone Bassment Series, and with support across the board from the likes of Kode9 and Benji B to house/techno veterans Anthony Shake Shakir and Francois K, he is currently operating on his own label and continuing to stun audiences with his unique and destructive dj sets and fluid live shows. 2562 sounds like very little else out there…

Hamacide – BUTA (Beat Conductorz Remixes)

Published June 22, 2011 by subcultureshanghai

BUTA Remixes – Artwork by Toru

As promised, here’s some more musical gems leading up to this Friday’s event with Hamacide and the Oil Works crew!

The track ‘BUTA’ feat Reito first appeared on Hamacide’s debut album ‘Might Little Machine’. BUTA is the Japanese word ‘pig’. Reito (the vocalist on the track) has a bleak outlook on himself and society in general in this track.  He compares himself and the world around himself to a pigs in a pen, using abstract metaphors to describe how a pigs behavior is very similar to human nature.

Along side the original track we also have 3 remixes from The Shanghai Beat Conductorz aka SIG, Ceezy and Sickstar! Each of them bring their own flavor to the track, but each without losing the menace of the original! Grab the tracks right here!

For PAUSE:MUSIC’s second full release, we are proud to bring you the debut album from one of China’s best beat makers – SIG!

SIG, from Qingdao, has been making dark beats and smokey grooves for a good few years. After coming to play at Shelter for KarmaKoma in 2008, SIG, who was living in Beijing at the time, quickly packed up his stuff and moved down to Shanghai to bathe in the cities darkness.

Sad Mirror is a collection of SIG’s works from a dark period of time in Qingdao. Smoked infused beats and haunting melodies with nods to DJ Krush, Shadow and Portishead, Sad Mirror is a stunning debut release from one of China’s most promising electronic artists.

Dope new mix from Demon Slayer!

Published March 2, 2011 by subcultureshanghai

Last Saturday, Demon Slayer laid down a special mix for KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles on Radiobomb’s 8th anniversary show. The mix is an absolute belter, well worth checking out! It includes tracks from Shanghai’s AM444, ChaCha, SIG and Sickstar alongside tracks by artists such as Devonwho, Mike Gao, Balam Acab and, ofcourse, some sick beats by the man himself.

Here’s what Demon Slayer had to say about the radio station (taken from his blog)

‘The station has been on air since 1949 and broadcasts to all of Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara and China Lake. It is the most powerful transmitting station in the western United States. The first listener-supported radio of its kind, the station holds many milestones in radio history and til this day stands highly regarded as a forerunner of free speech radio. This is my favorite radio station in California. They play all types of music, from underground and obscure to world music and new beats. They cover all forms of political agendas, often times exposing the corruption and hidden intentions of mainstream pubic radio.’

‘Sun Ra, Flying Lotus, Frank Zappa, Prince, Paul McCartney, Ginsberg, Alice Coltrane and many, many more have played in this exact same room! I felt the energy in the room when I performed live on air last year at the station with McGutter.’

Apparently, the KKK tried to blow up the station not once, but twice in 1970!!

Anyway, check out the mix here, and check out some of Demon Slayer’s great art and mixes here.
