The Bug & Daddy Freddy Poster by Anna Gruter

Published March 13, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

Ok so this weekend its the big one, one of the biggest events we’ve put on in a while – Ninja Tune’s THE BUG along side legendary Jamaican MC DADDY FREDDY! The pair have been on a tour of Asia, tearing up clubs and systems on their way, and this weekend sees the finale in China! We’ve got a whole load of stuff to post leading up to the big event, but first off here are some images direct from Idle Beats of the printing process for this month’s Sub-Culture poster designed by Anna Gruter, and is by far one of favorite posters yet! Was a hard job to follow up last month’s poster by Chairman Ca, but we think she nailed it! Look out for a competition on later in the week, and as always the screenprints will be available on the night for a special price of 150rmb (normal price is 200rmb)

This Weekend – Sub-Culture has you covered..

Published February 17, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

Busy weekend this week in Shanghai, lots of big, over priced parties going on. Here is a little guide of what we think you should do:

Step 1: This afternoon, get your head round this mix right here. Maybe give this a read, or this, or this, or this, or maybe this.

Step 2: Tonight, take it easy, Saturday is going to be a big one so save your energy. Get something good to eat and then head over to Arcade where Sub-Culture’s Drunk Monk will be dropping some musical niceness from 12 – 4am. Arcade do some fantastic drinks, and Drunk Monk gets paid with a bottle of rum, and he really shouldnt be drinking it all to himself, some come down and give him a hand with it!

Step 3: Sleep all day Saturday…

Step 4: Head to The Shelter Saturday night for Sub-Culture presents: Doc Daneeka! Serious dance-floor vibes all night long! Get down early to catch dji’s deep dub set with George Wyndham on harmonica, and if you’ve got a bit of extra cash buy one of these from the Idle Beats shop at the back of the dancefloor. It’s probably the most popular poster we have done so far so i dont think these will stick around for long. We were also saving some of these for a Sub-Culture poster exhibition, but we haven’t found the right venue just yet so the last remaining shirts will be on sale too!

Step 5: Recover…

Doc Daneeka poster by Chairman Ca!

Kicking of the year of the Dragon with something a little special, here’s Chairman Ca’s Sub-Culture poster for our event with Doc Daneeka on Saturday 18th February! We originally suggested zombies but instead we got multi-breasted female space demons and killer centipedes. Its all good though, we love centipedes…

1st Sub-Culture poster of 2012 – Designed by Immersiv

Published January 11, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

After a great year in 2011 we are starting 2012 with something a little different in the form of Immersiv. Immersiv are a duo of experimental film makers/artists from Germany for do some really great visual work and this Saturday in Shelter they are transforming the DJ booth into something quite different. Im not going to give too much away but make sure you get down to the first Sub-Culture session of 2012 for something fresh, both musically and visually. There’s a great interview with them here courtesy of Shanghai247.

This month’s poster was also designed by Immersiv and, as always, screen printed by Idle Beats. Idle Beats have put their own little twist on the Immersiv design to create a great poster to kick off what is going to be quite a year. Check smartshanghai later today for a chance to win 1 of 3 posters. We can also now reveal that next month’s poster is going to be designed by one of China’s best comic artists – Chairman Ca! More info on this in the coming weeks, but needless to say we are very honored that he has agreed to do our next poster!
