S L V EP – artwork by Kim Laughton

One of the most exciting releases to come out of Shanghai for some time, S L V’s debut EP has just been released on Urban Waves Records. S L V comprises of two of Shanghai’s best producers, Downstate and Hamacide, and the combination of the 2 is devastating! I (Drunk Monk) have been dropping ‘Killers’ and ‘Clip Arp’ in my sets recently and each time I have had people ask me what tunes were (including Kode9!). SVBKVLT will be releasing a limited S L V 7″ early next year, but until then head over the Urban Wave’s Bandcamp and get downloading this (and dont be cheap, support and pay!)

Also, this Friday see the return of Hollow Point to The Shelter. Myself, Downstate and Hamacide are on the controls and are on straight up shoot-to-kill orders. Expect to hear the S L V EP get a proper first outing, as well as a whole bunch of new material and upfront killers. Kevlar recommended….

Hamacide + Percee P + ChaCha + Blaise Deville

Published September 24, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

This landed in our inbox late last week, a new EP on Ziggurat Records which includes a Hamacide remix featuring Sub-Culture’s own ChaCha alongside Percee P and Shanghai’s Blaise Deville! The EP is available here for free download, and below is the official press release. Big!

‘Ziggurat Records is back. After launching the Flossed in Space event series in Atlanta & Brooklyn, releasing several cinematic music videos, and spending endless hours in the studio, Ziggurat is putting in work & will finish 2012 strong. You can expect solo releases from each member, new music videos, and huge collaborative singles.

Today, Ziggurat releases their Flossed in Space Remix EP called Don’t Lose Your High. It takes a mind-altering look back at Ziggurat’s debut album Flossed in Space. Take an audio acid trip through the ears of TreeKeeper, Hamacide, & LGHTSWTCH who creatively utilize the distinct Ziggurat style they have dubbed “cubism” & “milky wave.” The EP includes three remixes off the Flossed in Space LP including “Papaya Rap”, “Smithereens”, & “Oracle.” It also includes a hype new bonus track/single “Psyche High” by LGHTSWTCH, MIYAGI, & PURPLMONK. Don’t Lose Your High’s visual followup is an official music video for “All Purple Everything” that drops next week.’

Big Tip – Antidote with Kuedo tomorrow night!

Published March 1, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

We would hope that anyone in Shanghai into good electronic music will know whats going down tomorrow night at The Shelter, but just in case you somehow missed out on what was one of the best albums of last year – Kuedo’s ‘Severant’, here’s a little intro into what Antidote is bringing to Shanghai this Friday!

If there is one artist that encapsulates the new found air of uninhibited creative expression in modern electronic music then surely that artist is Jamie Teasdale.   From his seminal work as one half of Vex’d, which paved the way for what is now known as Dubstep, to his barrier breaking work under the name Jamie Vex’d, to his new and highly praised moniker as Kuedo, Mr Teasdale has made some of the best electronic music in the past 10 years.

Making his name as part of the acclaimed duo Vex’d, whose brutal take on Dubstep helped define it in its infancy, Jamie Teasdale’s re-invention under his Kuedo moniker is nothing short of breath-taking. His early works under this pseudonym such as the acclaimed ‘Starfox’ on Planet Mu were colourful and warm, playful and exuberant and perfectly encapsulated the new found sense of freedom and release found as he removed himself from the restrictive and often nonsensical notions of ‘genre’. Not one to rest on his laurels however, he spent each subsequent release developing and evolving his sound, the pinnacle of which is his debut LP ‘Severant’ , also released on Planet Mu. More introspective and melancholic than his earlier works, the emotive, bladerunner-esque soundscapes represent the futuristic, sci-fi world he now inhabits, a world that he has singlehandedly created for himself.

His sets, both as a DJ and Live, also reflect his wildly diverse range of influences and inspirations. Hard Atlanta rap instruments and fervent footwork sit side by side with 80’s synth soundtracks, quasi disco and all manner of elements from the post-dubstep musical universe, brought together with seaming ease. What defines Kuedo is, paradoxically, the impossibility of defining him. A renaissance man of electronic music and beyond, here’s to the future…

Joining Kuedo on the night will be Downstate fresh off his album release last week, Hamacide (who released a great EP with ChaCha this week), Blaise Deville, Cavia and some 8-bit madness from Monkey Benders. Don’t really need to say much more, if your in Shanghai and like proper electronic music then this is where you need to be!
