SVBKVLT LAUNCH & POSTER EXHIBITION – MUSIC + FILM

This Sunday at On Stage, to celebrate the launch of SVBKVLT and Idle Beats’ exhibition of all the Sub-Culture posters from the last 3 years, we have invited some of our favorite local live acts to join in on the fun. Here is a run down on who will be performing/showcasing their work on the day.

MENGQI

MengQi 1

Producing electronic music since the age of 14, Beijing’s MengQi is one of the most individual and interesting electronic musicians around. As well as his stall selling his own hand-made synths and effect boxes, MengQi will be performing a showcase using only his own DIY instruments to show what his inventions are capable of.

FADED GHOST

ChaCha- 2

Faded Ghost is the new solo project from Sub-Culture’s ChaCha. Dark, brooding synth works, drones, echos and warped vocals, Faded Ghost sounds like little else coming out of China. She will be performing a DJ/FX set, including new, forthcoming SVBKVLT material.

S L V

SLV_picC

Hamacide and Downstate’s S L V project is by far one of the best live electronic acts in Shanghai right now. Their debut performance at Sub-Culture a couple of months back was the perfect way to kick off Sub-Culture in 2013, and we are very excited to present their second Shanghai performance for the SVBKVLT launch.

 LON

lon

LON has had more leaving parties in Shanghai than we can remember, and he also makes some of the strangest music we’ve heard around these parts too. We aren’t sure what he will play, and probably he isn’t either, but we are sure its going to be something quite special.

The Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde Monster Mash

JEKYLL HYDE 3 faces

Following the success of last year’s performance opening for the Devil Music Ensemble & this year’s performance for Jue Festival Acid Pony Club and Tina Sprinkles will expand and create a live cinematic landscape titled “Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde Monster Mash”

Live Cinema can be described as a situationist audiovisual performance. Tina Sprinkles will be re editing and mashing up 3 different versions of the classic film Dr Jekyll& Mr Hyde, produced in 1920,1931 & 1941  creating a new narrative through live layering and video.  Acid Pony Club will be generating a unique audio landscape in direct response to the visual manipulation. The result is psychedelic, transcendental and challenges preconceived ideas and expectations of the cinematic experience.

Hiro Ikematsu – Short Movie

web_poster

Enter the world of John Raster. After he learns of his death during a skeptical job interview, he is forced to choose whether to accept or reject a life after death. This is an experimental film that uses electronic music in replacement of dialogue. Set in an industrial warehouse, It is essentially a modern musical of a man in purgatory coming to terms with his death.

Sub-Culture and Stockholm Syndrome present: Sean Canty (Demdike Stare, Pre-Cert /Dead-Cert) + Caliph8

@ The Shelter, 5 yongFu LU

Line Up: Sean Canty (A/V set), Caliph8,TzuSing, Drunk Monk, Faded Ghost, Kim Laughton

Entrance: 60rmb

Sub-Culture and Stockholm Syndrome join forces to bring you the first in a series of special events and are excited to present an A/V set Sean Canty, one half of Demdike Stare and Pre-Cert / Dead Cert Home Entertainment label boss!

Demdike Stare is the occult themed collaboration between Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker. Using the stepping stones of vinyl and VHS history as inspiration, and obscure hardware as the means, Demdike Stare create ethereal music that emanates from the unconscious. Fusing starkly different musical backgrounds, Sean hails from the Finder’s Keeper’s stable, and Miles through his numerous techno orientated monikers, they blend the two distinct worlds and genre obfuscation becomes the norm.

Joining Sean for our first collaboration will be Manila’s master of beats – Caliph8! Caliph’s live mpc shows are something of legend in Asia, and his band ‘Bent Lynchpin’ are destined for big things very soon. SVBKVLT will be releasing Caliph’s entry to their beat cassette series on the night, get down early to grab one of only 40 copies!

SVBKVLT Beat Tapes

Published March 7, 2013 by subcultureshanghai

The Anatomy Of A Cassette

Sub-Culture took a few months break at the start of the year to get a few things in order for 2013, the beginnings of which unfold tonight…

Along side the Sub-Culture / BTS Radio collaboration tonight at The Shelter, we are also releasing our first cassette – the SVBKVLT beat tape series. The platform aims to bring together and highlight some of the best beat producers from around asia, wether they be already known and active in the scene or hidden in their bedrooms, in an attempt to give these beat makers more exposure and also to help bring together the beat scene in the east.

SVBKVLT Beat Tapes

Although the cassette is an almost obsolete media format these days, there is still a small but strong scene around the world still releasing music on tape. Im not sure wether its purely nostalgia, but the warm hiss of a tape adds a little something to the sound of certain genres and gives it a more personal, physical feel. Also, when I buy music I like to hold something, to read the linear notes, to have something tangible rather than just a digital file which holds no real value. Although the main point is to listen to the music, i like to own it too.

Of course, not everyone has a cassette player these days, we know this, and so each SVBKVLT beat tape will also come with a digital download of the cassette in your choice of format (Flac, Wav, MP3, etc), and next month we will also be releasing a limited edition SVBKVLT tape player so you can experience the cassettes as they are supposed to sound. Also, those of you in Shanghai, Sacco down at Uptown Records (115 PingWu Lu) is opening up an analogue dungeon down in his vinyl pit and stocking boomboxes, walkmans, reel to reel players and other obsolete oddities.

Faded Ghost - Ghost Ark

The first cassette to be released is by Shanghai’s Faded Ghost (aka ChaCha). The Ghost Ark EP was released late last year, but the hazy drones and vocal loops sound so good on an analogue cassette that we had to re-release it in this format. It also comes with a bonus SLV remix of ‘I Remember’, download card, artwork by Nini Sum and packaged in a hand-numbered card box in an edition of only 40! Get down to The Shelter early tonight to grab a copy!

The second SVBKVLT tape will be from Manila’s Caliph8 and will be released on Saturday March 23rd at our first collaboration with Stockholm Syndrome featuring Demdike Stare’s Sean Canty and Caliph8 himself, and this will be followed by releases from Hong Kong’s FLoyd Cheung and Manila’s Red-I in April.

All current and upcoming cassettes will also be available online from next week, and if you would like to pre-order or are interested in releasing a cassette with us you can email us at subcultureshanghai@gmail.com.
