Sub-Culture Solo Projects

Published September 4, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

As some of your probably know, many of the members of Sub-Culture have their own various solo and collaboration projects going on. Here’s a quick run down on what they have been upto:

Steven Lorenz

As always, Stevens been working hard in the studio and his productions are getting tighter by the day. His latest output is a collaberation with Digital Monk (not related to Drunk Monk). Heavy, sparse dubstep styles, deadly stuff!

The ever-prolific Didje has been firing tunes out of his studio faster than we can listen. His latest output is this collaboration with Sheffield’s Dhalsim’s Reach, a jazzy ode to breaking genre classification entitled ‘Music Is Music’

Ubec has been locked in the studio working on his new mixtape ‘High Altitude’ which is due out soon. The latest addition to the mix is this fantasy hiphop jam with Didjelirium entitled ‘Fairy Tale’

George Wyndham

George and his band The Horde are finally getting their debut album together and it should be out by the end of the year. A blend of Folk, Bluegrass and Country with a twist, The Horde consist of  Tom Mangione (Guitar and vocals), Franco Rodriquez (Mandolin and vocals), Johnny Haru (Cajon) and George on Harmonica and vocals.  Beijing’s DaBaoGe have made this great little video featuring a couple of tracks from the album.

ChaCha has been locked tight in the studio finishing off AM444’s new album and also working on her new solo project Faded Ghost. New music is being held close to the chest right now, but keep an eye out in the near future for more news..

Re-Thinking Concrete

Published June 21, 2011 by subcultureshanghai

If you’ve been keeping up to date with http://www.didjelirium.com you will no doubt know by now that Sub-Culture/Uprooted member Didjelirium has been working together with Russian nutters Demokracy over the last year or so, either as a vocalist with Demokracy or as part of Original Fools with one 1/2 of the group –  Damskray. A few month’s back Demokracy and Didje entered a competition to remix Geste’s ‘Eating Concrete’ track which was released on Equinox Records earlier in the year, and guess what……they won!! Here’s a bit more info from Didje himself:

Geste got in touch with Demokracy and Original Fools, asking if we would be interested in participating in a remix contest for one of his track, Eating Concrete, out on Equinox records. I told him if he wanted a remix it would be more Demokracy or Damscray (1/2 of Original Fools) who would do it but Geste assured us it was alright to add vocals as well. This was around the beginning of the contest. As Demokracy was very busy with other projects that needed to be finished it seemed like we were not gonna send our remix before the deadline. So around thirty hours before the deadline I asked Damscray again about the remix and a few hours later he sent me a demo they prepared with Demokracy. In the next 2 hours I wrote lyrics and recorded the vocals, then sentthe accappella back for them to mix. A few hours later, it was submitted to the competition, and a few days later, we won the contest.

The Rethink Conrete EP is now available in digital form here, and a very special 7″ , featuring the Demokracy and Didjelirium ‘Re-Think’, and limited to only 100 copies, will drop on July 1st and is available to pre-order here! Be quick, these will fly out!

Upcoming Shanghai Releases Pt. 1

Published February 10, 2011 by subcultureshanghai

2011 has only just begun and its already looking like the most exciting year so far for Shanghai-made music. Over the past few years the only really notable artists to come out of Shanghai are B6 and MHP, but with more and more producers developing their skills, as well as gifted musicians and music makers moving from other cities in, and outside, of China, there is already a string of great releases lined up for the coming months. Here are a few of our picks coming out soon:

Demokracy – Double Star EP (Robox-Neotech)

Release: 12th Feb (beatport), 8th March (all others)

Unleashed this weekend on Doshy’s Robox Neotech label, the ‘Double Star EP’ by Russian mentalists Demokracy is going to be ruining speakers all over the globe. Uprooted Sunshine/Sub-Culture’s Didjelirium features on the Ep’s closer – ‘Searchlight’, a rough, heavy hitting track that takes no prisoners! Check out the Robox Soundcloud for a preview!

AM444 – Eye Wander (Pause Music)

Relase Date: April 1st

AM444 is the new project by local vocalist ChaCha (Sub-Culture, Uprooted Sunshine) and Dutch producer Jay.Soul. After years of  thoughts, discussions and drunken promises, the pair have finally been in the studio for the past few months and have come up with some of the freshest and most exciting music to come out of Shanghai for a while. Its pretty hard to say what genre AM444 fits into, but with hints of jazz, pop, funk, hiphop and electro its sounding super dope! Their first EP, entitled ‘Eye Wonder’ is dropping on 1st April on Shanghai’s PAUSE:MUSIC.

Sig – Sad Mirror (Pause Music)

Release Date: April 8th

SIG, from Qingdao, was first discovered by KarmaKoma in 2009. After his first gig at The Shelter, SIG quickly packed up his things and moved down here to soak up the Shanghai darkness. His highly anticipated debut album, Sad Mirror, will be released on April 8th on Shanghai based PAUSE:MUSIC. Sad Mirror is a collection of his journeys into trip hop and dark, smokey hiphop beats recorded during his time in Beijing and Qingdao. Heavy shit!
