AM444 meet Matthieu Chedid

Published January 6, 2014 by subcultureshanghai

am444 - M

After months of keeping it under wraps, we are finally able to announce that AM444 (ChaCha & Jay.Soul) are working with French pop legend Matthieu Chedid aka -M-. Their first collar comes in the form of -M-‘s rework of AM444’s ‘ShenJingMoShao’. Give it a listen here, and read the official announcement below:

‘Following his first tour in China in 2010, French pop rock maverick Matthieu Chedid better known under his artist name –M- , was hungry for new sounds from the middle Kingdom. After listening to different Chinese artists Matthieu finally had a crush on AM444, the duet project of Shanghai based vocalist and MC, ChaCha, and Dutch producer Jay Soul. Matthieu said he got seduced and inspired at once by the voice and universe of ChaCha and the soul colors of Jay Soul. Even though they have never met, he felt he had something in common with ChaCha and spent weeks digging into all her past songs. –M- and ChaCha might not belong to the same world, -M- being often under the spotlights and ChaCha preferring the shadow of underground clubs and mostly working with dubstep and bass music artists.  However -M- decided to collaborate with her and Jay Soul and did  a remix version of “Shen Jing Mo Shao”, a tune from AM444’s first album “Eye Wonder”. Re-titled “Détache toi” in French (“Break away”), the tune perfectly blends ChaCha and Matthieu’s voices and adds the chemistry of elaborate guitar chords to Jay Soul’s dub-by tune.

Illustrator and animation artist Leilei was chosen to design the cover of Shenjing Moshao’s EP. He looked at many of –M- visual elements, loved his look and universe and came out with a beautiful and shimmering collage.’

Red-I & Soul Flower (B-Side, Dubplate, Irie Sunday – Manila, Philippines)

Founding member of B-Side and Dubplate Manila, Red-I is one of the corner stones of the Manila beat scene. Heavily influenced by reggae, dub, hiphop and bass-weight, after releasing numerous beat tapes over the last few years he finally released his debut LP earlier in 2012 – Jahdgement Day, a heavy-hitting 15 track behemoth of electronica, dub, bass and experimental sounds. Although his previous works are sample based dusty grooves, this album focuses more on space analog synth work and drum programs.

Partner in crime, Soul Flower, is one of Manila’s best kept secrets. One of the finest Djs in Asia, Soul Flower brings serious heavyweight sounds to the table. The pair have played with Sub-Culture in Tokyo as well as Shanghai and never fail to mash up the dance!

Jase (The Beats – Saigon, Vietnam)

Jase is Vietnam’s original bass DJ. After buying his first pair of 1200’s whilst living in Australia in 2001, Jase moved back to Vietnam in 2007 and started ‘The Beats’, the now legendary bass movement in his native land, focusing on promoting beat based music and bringing international DJs to town such as Daedelus, DJ Premier, TokiMonsta, Doshy, Samiyam, Jamie Vex’d and many more. He also co-founded Saigon Rockers to push the Dub Reggae scene in Saigon. Its been a good few years since Jase last played with Sub-Culture, and we are very excited to see what sounds he brings with him!

ChaCha (Sub-Culture, Chee Productions, AM444 – Shanghai, China)

ChaCha, from Guizhou, China, has been singing for over 10 years. Never scared to try new styles, ChaCha rhymes and sings on everything from trip hop and reggae to dubstep and drum and bass. Although she loves to perform with all these styles of music, her main passion is for trip hop and downbeat. A self-taught producer, her own productions are dark and moody, with influences from the likes of classic trip hop such as Dj Shadow, DJ Krush and Portishead to the more abstract, idm sounds of Boards of Canada and Tujiko Noriko. As well as member of Shanghai’s Uprooted Sunshine Soundsytem and Sub-Culture crew, ChaCha has recorded with the likes of Kode9, Clive Chin, Jahtari, Desto, Jimi Tenor, Adrian Sherwood, Hamacide, Rumi and Sickstar, as well as her AM444 project along side Jay.Soul. One of China’s brightest underground stars, ChaCha effortlessly switches up styles to fit the reggae, electronic, hip-hop and leftfield grooves she sings her sharp self-penned lyrics over. ChaCha was also the first ever mainland Chinese participant at Red Bull Music Academy last year in Madrid, and since then has started a new solo project under the moniker Faded Ghost, a dark, ethereal sound using vocal effects, loops, field recordings and synth work.

Drunk Monk (Sub-Culture, SVBKVLT, The Shelter – Shanghai, China)

Drunk Monk is the founder of Shanghai’s The Shelter, Sub-Culture and the SVBKVLT label. A record collector from an early age due to his father obsession with vinyl, Drunk Monk has been pushing the music he loves for over 15 years. Responsible for bringing some of the most forward thinking electronic artists to China, as well as promoting local sounds and art through the now-closed PAUSE:MUSIC and his newly inaugurated SVBKVLT imprint. Depending on his alcohol intake on the night, Drunk Monk’s dj sets range from a heavy sonic assault to aural bliss, but are always packed full or rarities, exclusives and upfront sounds.

Sub-Culture presents: 2562 / A Made Up Sound

Thursday 4th April – Dada Beijing / Friday 5th April – The Shelter Shanghai

Beijing Support: Yauman, Sickstar, Drunk Monk

Shanghai Support: Acid Pony Club (live), Drunk Monk, Steven Lorenz, ChaCha, Didje, Ubec

Sub-Culture is very excited to present 2562 aka A Made Up Sound!

Over the course of three landmark albums on Pinch’s mighty Tectonic label and his own When In Doubt imprint, Dave Huismans has laid out a singular and highly influential vision of broken rhythms, off time percussion, crazed sampling and field recording, re-inventing techno, disco and bass music at each and every turn.

Having released on Tectonic, Martyn’s 3024 and the legendary Clone Bassment Series, and with support across the board from the likes of Kode9 and Benji B to house/techno veterans Anthony Shake Shakir and Francois K, he is currently operating on his own label and continuing to stun audiences with his unique and destructive dj sets and fluid live shows. 2562 sounds like very little else out there…

This Saturday’s Line Up

Published October 12, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

Ok, so there have been a whole load of additions and announcements about this Saturday, lets break it down right here. As always, Idle Beats will be down with the brand new screen-print of the poster above, designed by Dan Nguyen AKA Demon Slayer!

10.00pm – 11.00pm: AM444 – ‘Rooms’ listening session

Fresh from the King Otis Studio via the Faded Ghost Studio, AM444’s debut full length album is finally finished and we are honored to present this preview listening session for all those that cant wait until the release party on Friday 26th October. At  10pm we will be playing the album in full for the first time in public. Get down early and be the first to hear ‘Rooms’!!

11.00pm – 12.00am – TightFace

A last minute and very welcome addition to the line up, One Handed Music’s TightFace is in Shanghai and has offered to drop a set for us! His beats are seriously dope and we’re still getting over the fact that he’s coming to play for us. Also, he’s in town researching and digging music for his radio show back in the UK. Any beatmakers out there, get down for his set and bring him a CDR of your freshest creations, you may get some London air play!

12.00am – 01.00am – Downstate (live)

Our favourite Shanghai live act, Downstate’s sets never fail to blow us away each and every time. Ahead of his performance at Sub-Culture Tokyo (yeah, that’s what we said) we couldn’t think of any better act to open up for our heavyweight headliner. We are not sure what Downstate will do with his live set, we never are, we don’t think he is either, but whatever he does we know it will be deadly. Check the little live jam he put online the other day..

01.00am – 02.30am – PINCH

Little introduction needed here. This is the 3rd time Pinch has played at Sub-Culture, and if we bring someone over from the UK 3 times you know we have our reasons why. Pinch is a true don in the UK bass scene and never fails to bring an sheer avalanche of sounds and frequencies like no one else. If you caught him last time we know you will be here this time, and if this is your first time to see the Tectonic head honcho, your in for a real treat! Strictly dubplate and vinyl, the way it should be!

02.30 – 04.00 – Steven Lorenz with Esia, Arminda, Didje, ChaCha & Ubec

It’s pretty difficult to follow up the mighty Pinch, so we reckon the best way to do this is to fly over Sub-Culture MCs Esia and Arminda, reunite them with Didje and ChaCha, introduce them to Ubec, give them a bunch of microphones and throw them in the DJ booth with Steven Lorenz. Straight up rub-a-dubstep session!

04.00 – End – Drunk Monk

Getting drunk, making noise, embarrassing himself and sending DJs home on a stretcher since 1982. Will this boy ever grow up?

Hamacide + Percee P + ChaCha + Blaise Deville

Published September 24, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

This landed in our inbox late last week, a new EP on Ziggurat Records which includes a Hamacide remix featuring Sub-Culture’s own ChaCha alongside Percee P and Shanghai’s Blaise Deville! The EP is available here for free download, and below is the official press release. Big!

‘Ziggurat Records is back. After launching the Flossed in Space event series in Atlanta & Brooklyn, releasing several cinematic music videos, and spending endless hours in the studio, Ziggurat is putting in work & will finish 2012 strong. You can expect solo releases from each member, new music videos, and huge collaborative singles.

Today, Ziggurat releases their Flossed in Space Remix EP called Don’t Lose Your High. It takes a mind-altering look back at Ziggurat’s debut album Flossed in Space. Take an audio acid trip through the ears of TreeKeeper, Hamacide, & LGHTSWTCH who creatively utilize the distinct Ziggurat style they have dubbed “cubism” & “milky wave.” The EP includes three remixes off the Flossed in Space LP including “Papaya Rap”, “Smithereens”, & “Oracle.” It also includes a hype new bonus track/single “Psyche High” by LGHTSWTCH, MIYAGI, & PURPLMONK. Don’t Lose Your High’s visual followup is an official music video for “All Purple Everything” that drops next week.’

Rumi & ChaCha 2012 Bedroom Mixtape

Published September 12, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

In July 2012, Sub-Culture (www.subcultureshanghai.com) brought over MC Rumi and Skyfish from Tokyo to perform with them at The Shelter in Shanghai and Code Space in Hangzhou. During their visit, Rumi spent most of the time locked in our bedroom studio with Sub-Culture’s ChaCha, and this mix is the first release from these sessions.

Produced, recorded and mixed by Rumi and ChaCha over the course of one week, the mix serves as an intro leading up to the Black Smoker Records 12″ release of a track Rumi and ChaCha recorded with Hamacide during the same sessions. In November 2012, ChaCha, Hamacide and other members of Sub-Culture will travel to Tokyo to perform at the release party of the 12″ and also hold the first Sub-Culture Tokyo event.

Sub-Culture Solo Projects

Published September 4, 2012 by subcultureshanghai

As some of your probably know, many of the members of Sub-Culture have their own various solo and collaboration projects going on. Here’s a quick run down on what they have been upto:

Steven Lorenz

As always, Stevens been working hard in the studio and his productions are getting tighter by the day. His latest output is a collaberation with Digital Monk (not related to Drunk Monk). Heavy, sparse dubstep styles, deadly stuff!

Didjelirium

The ever-prolific Didje has been firing tunes out of his studio faster than we can listen. His latest output is this collaboration with Sheffield’s Dhalsim’s Reach, a jazzy ode to breaking genre classification entitled ‘Music Is Music’

Ubec

Ubec has been locked in the studio working on his new mixtape ‘High Altitude’ which is due out soon. The latest addition to the mix is this fantasy hiphop jam with Didjelirium entitled ‘Fairy Tale’

George Wyndham

George and his band The Horde are finally getting their debut album together and it should be out by the end of the year. A blend of Folk, Bluegrass and Country with a twist, The Horde consist of  Tom Mangione (Guitar and vocals), Franco Rodriquez (Mandolin and vocals), Johnny Haru (Cajon) and George on Harmonica and vocals.  Beijing’s DaBaoGe have made this great little video featuring a couple of tracks from the album.

ChaCha

ChaCha has been locked tight in the studio finishing off AM444’s new album and also working on her new solo project Faded Ghost. New music is being held close to the chest right now, but keep an eye out in the near future for more news..
