Jack Sparrow (or not)

Jack Sparrow (or not)

In December, as part of the 3 year anniversary of Shelter, we booked one of our favourite artists of 2010 – Jack Sparrow. Unfortunately, due to some visa complication, Jack was unable to make the show, but luckily we still had a great turn out and, joined by Shanghai’s 1st lady of DnB Siesta, we mashed up the Shelter proper anyway. We are going to reschedule Jack Sparrow for some time early next year so keep an eye out. Check the poster, designed by Shanghai illustrator XiaoLongHua!

Sub-Culture VS Dubway

Dubway VS Sub-Culture

In November we invited over to Shanghai one of our favourite crew in Asia, Bangkok’s Dubway crew! Headed by DJ Dragon, Dubway have been pushing heavy beats and bass in Thailand for a good few years now, and it was a really good time having them over here. Dragon has played for Sub-Culture before a few years back, and Drunk Monk and ChaCha went over to Bangkok to play with the crew last May. This time we brough over the whole crew (Dragon, Jo Stitch and MC Sinnamon) plus Graf writer Pakorn. The crew tore up the Shelter, whilst Pakorn did some live painting behind the DJ booth (and also painted a mural down at MoGanShan Road). Sub-Culture should hopefully be going over to Bangkok once again in May 2011 for the second leg on the soundclash! Check out the event poster for Shanghai by Dubway artist Thun Puchpen!

Hyperdub returns to Shanghai – Kode 9 in September!

Published August 23, 2010 by subcultureshanghai

Tuesday 21st September

Sub-Culture present: Kode 9 (Hyperdub)

Line Up: Kode 9, Deville, Drunk Monk, Steven Lorenz, dji, ChaCha, Didje, Esia, Arminda

Entrance: 60rmb

Music: Dubstep, Grime, Funky

Sub-Culture are very excited to welcome back one of our favourite artists of the 21st century, the one and only KODE 9.

Although born in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, Kode9 is genetically a junglist. He started DJing in 1990 at the age of 16, playing a fusion of reggae, breaks, hip hop, jazz, funk and house. He was subsequently swept up by the emergence of the breakbeat hardcore, jungle and drum’n’bass scenes, and has been rinsin’ breaks, ragga chat and bubblin’ basslines ever since. DJing across the UK during the 90s, from Edinburgh, to Coventry, Kode9 migrated to London in 1997, suffering infection to darker strains of the emergent 2step garage scene, and after forming his label/collective Hyperdub in 2004, electronic music would never be the same again.

With a roster of people including Burial, Ikonika, The Bug, King Midas Sound, Darkstar, Zomby and many, many more, Hyperdub consistently puts out some of the most forward thinking and futuristic music out there. His recent mixtape release for DJ Kicks shows just how flexible and imaginative Kode 9’s tastes and skills are. A true pioneer and manipulator of soundwaves, once you’ve experienced one of Kode 9’s set, you will never be the same again.

Kode 9 (Hyperdub)

Kode 9, Deville, Drunk Monk, Steven Lorenz, dji, ChaCha, Didje, Esia, Arminda

Dubstep, Grime, Funky
