2011 has only just begun and its already looking like the most exciting year so far for Shanghai-made music. Over the past few years the only really notable artists to come out of Shanghai are B6 and MHP, but with more and more producers developing their skills, as well as gifted musicians and music makers moving from other cities in, and outside, of China, there is already a string of great releases lined up for the coming months. Here are a few of our picks coming out soon:
Demokracy – Double Star EP (Robox-Neotech)
Release: 12th Feb (beatport), 8th March (all others)
Unleashed this weekend on Doshy’s Robox Neotech label, the ‘Double Star EP’ by Russian mentalists Demokracy is going to be ruining speakers all over the globe. Uprooted Sunshine/Sub-Culture’s Didjelirium features on the Ep’s closer – ‘Searchlight’, a rough, heavy hitting track that takes no prisoners! Check out the Robox Soundcloud for a preview!
Conrank – Next Step (Suicide Dub)
Release Date: End March/April
Conrank releases his second E.P “Next Step” this year this time on respected label ‘Suicide Dub’ run by dubstep nutter High Rankin. Featuring 4 tracks and some huge remixes in the pipeline its set to be a banging release. Expect to see the release hit the shops around March/April. Check out his mix for Kongkast for a few previews of what to expect
AM444 – Eye Wander (Pause Music)
Relase Date: April 1st
AM444 is the new project by local vocalist ChaCha (Sub-Culture, Uprooted Sunshine) and Dutch producer Jay.Soul. After years of thoughts, discussions and drunken promises, the pair have finally been in the studio for the past few months and have come up with some of the freshest and most exciting music to come out of Shanghai for a while. Its pretty hard to say what genre AM444 fits into, but with hints of jazz, pop, funk, hiphop and electro its sounding super dope! Their first EP, entitled ‘Eye Wonder’ is dropping on 1st April on Shanghai’s PAUSE:MUSIC.
Sig – Sad Mirror (Pause Music)
Release Date: April 8th
SIG, from Qingdao, was first discovered by KarmaKoma in 2009. After his first gig at The Shelter, SIG quickly packed up his things and moved down here to soak up the Shanghai darkness. His highly anticipated debut album, Sad Mirror, will be released on April 8th on Shanghai based PAUSE:MUSIC. Sad Mirror is a collection of his journeys into trip hop and dark, smokey hiphop beats recorded during his time in Beijing and Qingdao. Heavy shit!
